There are three steps to using our treatment
- Clean and disinfect the affected area.
- Apply the Best Chilblains treatment.
- Wrap and cover of affected area for best results.
The treatment process is over 7 days, sometimes a little longer for stubborn chilblains. Should the chilblains clear up quickly it is important to continue the treatment for an additional 2 days. You should feel relief from the symptoms within a few days and usually on the first couple of nights.
What you will need
- Table Salt, Sea Salt or Epsom Salt
- Wooden Spoon
- Suitable bandage or covering that will keep the ointment on the affected area. (Cecilia recommends Glad or cling wrap plastic as it is effective and common in most households)
- Sock or Cotton Bandage (to cover Chilblains area)
Step 1 - Clean and disinfect the area
The treatment should be applied once every day. It is recommended to apply the treatment at night . This allows the ointment to penetrate the affected area without being removed by day to day activities.
|1.1||Pour warm water (not hot or boiling) into a bowl. Fill it with enough water to allow you to soak the chilblain-affected area.||Warm water increases the solubility of the salt. Using hot or boiling water will only be detrimental to the skin.|
|1.2||Stir the warm water and simultaneously add the salt a bit at a time ensuring that the salt dissolves. You'll need approximately 1/4 of a cup of salt per 1 cup of water to create a strong salt water solution.||Creating a strong salt water solution is critical to sufficiently cleansing the area.|
|1.3||Soak the affected area for up to 20 minutes in the salt water solution. Note: Soaking the area is preferred however for harder to reach areas you can simply pad the area continually with the salt water solution.||By soaking the area for a minimum of 5 minutes, you are allowing the solution to penetrate and effectively cleanse the skin.|
|1.4||Gently pat the area dry with a towel.||It is best to be very gentle to avoid any further irritation to the skin.|
Salt water dries out the skin
Washing the skin with a salt water solution causes the skin to dry. The Best Chilblains Treatment contains a natural moisturiser and helps to counteract this problem. You can apply the treatment on the top of your hands and feet if the salt water causes any dryness and irritation.
Step 2 - Apply the ointment
As with any treatment be sure to test the ointment on a small area of unaffected skin for any adverse or allergic reaction prior to commencing the treatment. In addition to this should the affected area become worse or more painful discontinue use immediately and see a medical practitioner. We have never had anyone inform us of this.
|2.1||Ensure your hands are clean and liberally apply the Best Chilblains Treatment ointment to the affected area. The treatment applies quite nicely if you move your finger in a circular motion to warm up the ointment whilst it is in the tin.||Clean hands are ensure no dirt or oils irritate the skin. It is important to use enough of the treatment for it to be completely effective.|
|2.2||Cover the area with a suitable non-absorbing bandage. If you don't have one you can use plastic cling wrap as an alternative.||It is important to use a non-absorbing bandage or covering to ensure the treatment stays on the skin. Failing to do so may result in the treatment being absorbed and therefore reducing contact time with the skin.|
|2.3||Cover with the sock or bandage well enough so that it will stay on while you sleep.||Keeping the area securely wrapped will give the ointment time to take effect.|
|2.4||In the morning remove all bandaging. Rinse and dry the area to let it air.|
|2.5||Repeat this process each night for 7-10 days depending on your healing progress. You should notice some improvements within the first few days.|
For difficult areas
If you have chilblains in an area other than hands or feet, you may have to get creative with your bandaging. It is important to keep the area covered in plastic under the bandaging as this helps to accelerate the healing process. After airing, keep the affected area covered as well as warm and dry. Do this by wearing footwear, gloves or light bandaging as required.
Step 3 - Follow up treatment
|3.1||After the chilblains have healed, continue the use of the treatment for at least two further days.||This reduces the chance of a chilblains returning.|
|3.2||You may continue to use the treatment in smaller dosages at a time convenient to you if you have stubborn chilblains.||This can help to prevent stubborn chilblains redeveloping.|
|3.3||If you are particularly susceptible to chilblains at colder times of the year, it is a good idea to apply the treatment cream before chilblains occur.||Preempting winter chilblains and applying the ointment in advance can stop chilblains occurring at all.|
Your experience using our Best Chilblains Treatment may differ slightly from these typical scenarios. Some stubborn chilblains may require longer or consistent treatment. Always remember to consult a medical professional if symptoms persist.
